The Greenhouse Effect
The Greenhouse Effect keeps the Earth warm enough for life to exist. When the Sun's light shines down on the Earth, about 30% of it's radiation is reflected back into space by our atmosphere and the rest reaches the planet's surface. From here, some of that sunlight is reflected back upward as infrared radiation. This infrared radiation is then absorbed by "greenhouse gases", which traps heat and warms up the planet.
